It’s a blog! It’s a website! It’s a… weblog?!

by Patricia on September 21, 2011

Patricia Carlson Freelance is suffering from an identity crisis.

Is it a blog?

Is it a website?

The answer is… it’s both. A weblog? A blosite? wlogsite? A blogweb?

I’m hoping the dual-purpose of Patricia Carlson Freelance isn’t confusing for visitors, but I understand if it is. With two different rows of headers and weird ‘C’ategory names, it might be hard to know what you’re looking at or where to find what you’re searching for. I’m writing this not only as a guide for folks who stop by Patricia Carlson Freelance, but also as a tutorial for folks interested in being, or working with, freelance writers. I’m sharing this post at today’s (Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011) Fargo-Moorhead Professional Communicators meeting (a local chapter of the North Dakota Professional Communicators), where I am this month’s featured guest speaker.

Here’s a quick tour:

The top header is filled with standard website pages where you’ll find information about my work experience, published pieces and how to get in touch with me.

The “Home Page” will always display the latest and greatest of my current and previous blog posts. Every time I post something new, it will be sure to land here first. With a catchy picture, no less! Once the post has rotated out of the home page (usually after 6 posts), you can find it on its assigned ‘C’ategory page(s).

The “Career Page” encapsulates my professional background. You will learn more about my work history and find my resume here.

The “Clips Page” sources some of my published work. I don’t post all of my previous work here, but I probably should. What do you think?

The “Contact Page” has a form to reach out to me via email. Give it a whirl! I promise to get back to you. And, I put a little blurb there about the writing/editing/coaching services I provide… one final reminder of how I can help you out as a freelance writer!

Now… here’s where it gets tricky… hahaha… Tricky Tricia! The ‘C’ategory pages are essentially a blog platform… broken down into topics… all beginning with the letter ‘C’ in honor of my daughter’s initials. These pages give me an opportunity to write about things I think are cool, plug my new clips, post new pics… you name it.

CC is dedicated to my daughter, the fabulous and fun Miss Coralynn (otherwise known as CC)! I hope you’ll love her just as much as I do!

Covet is trend watching by Tricia! Here you’ll find my favorite goods, styles, music, clothes, makeup, decor, pet stuff… really anything and everything that grabs my attention, and hopefully yours, too!

Capture is photos, photos, photos! I can’t promise they’ll look as gorgeous as this professional shot from Shari Bare Photography, but they’ll ‘capture’ your attention. I’m a dork.

Care asks, “What are you passionate about?” I like to help our troops, underprivileged children and animals. We’ll talk about how to help others here!

Catch is a potpourri of stuff that doesn’t fit into my other categories.

Company is devoted to family and friends… and company who stay at our home. Plus, tips and tricks on how to make those visits more comfortable for everyone involved!

Cook collects my mish-mashed attempts at making food. And the people who dare to eat it.

The goal is to keep my writing skills sharp when I’m not pounding keys on an assignment and to hopefully draw in curious readers (like you!). Then, I hope you’ll take some time to check out my professional website pages and notice all the other stuff I do. I usually include a link to at least one of these pages in my blog posts. Sometimes I get jobs this way. Other times, I make the initial contact and send people to my page.

Whatever way people find me, I want you to walk away from Patricia Carlson Freelance with knowledge of my professional background and a feel for my personality. I think you can tell a lot about compatibility from the way a writer presents herself online. I want potential clients and readers to know right away who I am, who I write for, what my past assignments are like, what matters most to me and where you can find me.

Patricia Carlson Freelance is still a work in progress. I’d like to know what you think. Please send me an email with your impressions, suggestions, and anything else that pops into your mind.
